James Garner (born James Scott Baumgarner on April 7, 1928) is an American film and television actor. He has starred in several television series spanning a career of more than five decades, including his roles as Bret Maverick in the popular 1950s western-comedy series, Maverick, Jim Rockford in the popular 1970s detective drama, The Rockford Files and the father of Katey Sagal's character on 8 Simple Rules following the death of John Ritter. He has starred in dozens of movies, including The Great Escape (1963) and Paddy Chayefsky's The Americanization of Emily (1964)....Edd Byrnes most famous role was as Gerald Lloyd "Kookie" Kookson III on the TV detective series 77 Sunset Strip. His constant tending of his ducktail haircut led to many jokes and a hit song, "Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb", which he recorded with Connie Stevens. The Kookie character was an example of the hipster sidekick who talks jive talk and knows what is "the word on the street"....Roger Smith signed with Columbia Pictures in 1957 and made several films, then moved to Warner Bros. in 1959. His signature television role was as Jeff Spencer, a private detective in the firm headed by Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.. Like some other detective shows of the period, this show's title was its address: 77 Sunset Strip. Smith was forced to leave the series in 1959, due to a blood clot in his brain. His health continued to decline for some time, and he was forced to retire from acting after Myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease, was diagnosed in 1965. His condition went into remission in 1985. Following his retirement from performing, he has managed his wife Ann-Margret's career and produced her popular Las Vegas stage shows.
